Alex Shou’s paintings take on the spontaneity and boldness of the impressionists as well as the emotion and exaggeration of the expressionists. On his works are these robust and weighty brushstrokes presenting imageries and forms in a style that is distinctively his own.
Melody in Colours is Shou’s second solo exhibition at Art Beatus Gallery. In his first solo exhibition, Will It Still Rains Tomorrow?, two years ago, Shou showed paintings that reminded viewers of still frames from the romantic black and white movies. This time the exhibits are mostly flowers in vibrant colours.
“After an adventure into a world of black and white brushstrokes years ago, this time the beauty of flowers attracts me,” Shou said in his artist’s statement. “This simple subject has grace, peace and elegance that can only be created by God's mighty touch. I admire its natural simplicity as well as the fresh colors. The joy of painting them is simple but sincere.”
