Wonderland
by AJC Gallery
Location: Amelia Johnson Contemporary
Date: 7 Apr - 7 May 2011

Amelia Johnson Contemporary is delighted to present a group exhibition designed for discerning little collectors. An eclectic mix of oils, embroidery, papier mache, cut outs, photography and etchings, depicting a wide range of subjects from butterflies through tracts of text to robots and speeding cars, are selected in this rich and vibrant exhibition. The works of these international artists have been careful curated to produce a show that will enchant the younger visitors to the gallery and delight the inner child in us all. Welcome to Wonderland! Rachel Castle, joint founder of The Nest, has worked for The Conran Shop in the UK and regularly styles and writes for Australian lifestyle magazines. Here she presents a collection of lovingly hand printed screen prints and hand stitched one-off embroideries featuring apples, animals, cars and texts. Jennifer Collier is a young British artist who creates innovative textiles and craft pieces using natural and found materials. For Wonderland she has created a series of five dresses from various found papers such as antique sheet music, old letters and children’s nursery rhyme books which she presents alongside various objects (toys, thimbles, thread, a crayon) to create objects of beauty and contemplation. Meredith Gaston is a Sydney/Berlin based artist creating paintings, watercolours and illustrations for both children and the young at heart. Her bold, warm colours and simple forms exude happiness, joy and sensitivity and encourage experiencing the world through grateful and curious eyes. The canvases by French artist, Sandrine Rondard are humorous, colourful and full of whimsical charm. Her work harks back to a bygone era and references such great artists as Picasso, Lautrec and Klimt. These nostalgic portraits of children are exquisitely executed in oil resulting in works that are beautiful and evocative. Hand cut from vintage magazines, Catherine Swan’s paper butterflies appear to be specimens from a nostalgic technicolour world perpetually fluttering between the 50s and 60s. Featuring powdery lilacs, candy pinks, baby blues and soft oranges these Papillons de Papier are meticulously cut from vintage children’s books and magazines. The gallery will be presenting a special program of events and collaterals especially designed for younger visitors to the gallery throughout the duration of Wonderland.
