Amelia Johnson Contemporary is delighted to introduce the work of three emerging artists, Anna Lim, Tang Kwok Hin and Michelle Thompson. All three artists aim to address the Proustian idea that Art is a selective re-creation of reality according to an artist’s metaphysical value judgments. The artists of Microcosm use their work to recreate an alternate universe composed of selected elements and often-overlooked details. A newcomer to the gallery’s stable of artists is Lim AnNa, a young Korean artist. For Microcosm Lim has selected works from two of her series. The first series; The Romantic Soldiers depict minute, intricate stagings of war scenarios. All white toy soldiers play out their battles in an all white landscape. The only colour in these landscapes is the piece of food that represents the enemy. Lim graduated from the Visual Arts Division at the Sangmyung University, Korea and then went on to obtain her MFA at the University of California, USA. She has held numerous solo exhibitions in both the USA and Korea and has won several grants and awards including Young Photographer if the Year in New York. Tang Kwok Hin has created four new works using the exhibition’s Proustian theme as a starting point. His work comprises photographs of intricate imaginary landscapes using ready-made elements appropriated from printed and electronic media combined with his own photographs which he deconstructs and layers between plates of glass. Each work is normally composed of six layers of glass, a technique that distorts the overall visual impression and lends these pieces a ghostly, intangible air. This year alone Tang Kwok Hin has exhibited as a finalist in the Arte Lagune Prize, Venice, in Tel Aviv, Israel and at the Chongqing Biennale, China. Further projects in the pipeline make this artist one to watch and will establish him as one of the most interesting Hong Kong artists to emerge in the past few years. Michelle Thompson is most notably known as an illustrator and has been at the forefront of illustration since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1996. Her illustrations have appeared internationally, including collaboration with the influential British designer Vaughan Oliver and with Cherie Blair (former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s wife) for her book 'The Goldfish Bowl'. Clients include the Royal Mail, BBC, Reebok, Penguin Books, and The Guardian amongst others. For Microcosm Thompson showcases her fine art work, selecting five original collages as well as three silkscreen prints. Michelle Thompson’s work is a combination of mark making, traditional collage techniques and photography combined with digital processes. Uniquely versatile and constantly evolving, her work encompasses both found and created elements, be they figurative, abstract or typographic. The artist draws from her vast archive of elements collected over the past 15 years, using everything from postcards, books and magazines, to wood block type, typewriters and printing sets. Thompson overlays these found elements with paint and ink, pen and pencil, as well as her own photography to create her multi-layered collages. We are delighted to be presenting this exhibition which has been designed both to introduce the works of these young and talented artists to a wider audience as well as to provide an entry level opportunity for young art collectors.
