Shifting Ground
by AJC Gallery
Location: Amelia Johnson Contemporary
Artist(s): Naiza KHAN, Faiza BUTT
Date: 29 Sep - 29 Oct 2011

Amelia Johnson Contemporary in conjunction with Rossi & Rossi, London is delighted to present a two woman collaborative exhibition by the award winning Pakistani artists Faiza Butt & Naiza Khan.

Entitled Shifting Ground, the artists use this exhibition to discuss the idea of changing personal and artistic perspectives. Exploring a cultural transformation that includes migration and assimilation as well as the cultural expectations that both are subject to and the resulting possible ‘contaminations’. The two artists share much common ground. Both artists use their work to explore notions of gender and the balance between control and power. Prominent issues which each artist approaches from a unique perspective. Butt’s work concentrates on sexuality, power, pleasure, pain. Khan’s work focuses on the issues of time, memory, space and limitation. Most obviously, their work has a foundation and a strong rooting in Pakistan. The Pakistani roots are clearly evident in the work of Faiza Butt as she brings to our attention various social, gender and political issues faced by a young Pakistani. Butt’s paintings are laboriously crafted using a near obsessive technique of tiny dots – this style is reminiscent of the par dokht style in miniature painting – a rigorous process that involves the covering of the painted surface with individual dots. These dots also replicate pixels structure of a photograph, on polyester translucent films. This is especially relevant given that the artist uses photographs taken from newspapers and magazines as her inspiration. The pieces are mounted on light boxes, activating the process of development and creating an ethereal iconic appeal.
