Where Art Meets Function
by AJC Gallery
Location: Amelia Johnson Contemporary
Artist(s): Mariko JESSE
Date: 7 Sep - 24 Sep 2011

Amelia Johnson Contemporary in collaboration with Faux is thrilled to be presenting a unique collection of one of Hong Kong’s most loved artists, illustrators and designers. In this enchanting exhibition Jesse will present over twenty etchings and Japanese woodblock prints featuring teapots, teaspoons, playing cards, birds and flowers. As well as her fine art work Faux will be presenting her captivating Hong Kong toile and her beautiful Peony design, commissioned especially by Faux and available as an exclusive range of fabrics, cushions, rugs as well as porcelain teapots and teacups.

Mariko Jesse’s work celebrates the patterns, colours and textures of different cultures, a collusion of East and West. She finds beauty and inspiration in ordinary things: the humble objects of our everyday lives, which often go unnoticed, and through them she explores ideas about her own sense of place and identity. As a printmaker she excels in creating whimsical compositions that are transformed via various techniques into one-off pieces . Often this is through incorporating etchings of antique kimono patterns or colour transfers from vintage wrapping paper into her prints. Mariko Jesse has worked for various international clients, including VOGUE, Tiffany & Co., Burberry, Lane Crawford, the BBC, Martha Stewart, The Boston Globe, and The Mandarin Oriental. She has illustrated many children’s books, and created the permanent interior artwork for an entire MTR station in Hong Kong. She is currently an Associate Lecturer at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London. Most recently her work was accepted as a part of the prestigious annual Royal Academy Summer Art Exhibition where it is currently on display.
