Artist(s): LEE Carol Mei Kuen
Date: 17 May - 20 May 2012

10 Chancery Lane Gallery Art Projects Presents Hong Kong Artist Carol Lee Mei Kuen in Threads of Luminosity.  Lee will present works in 3,000 square feet of exhibition space that will include installation, video and works on paper.  Her series of time works venture to capture time through sunlight.  Her thoughtful and delicate works allow us to record time as a physical object and at the same moment to reflect on the meaning of time itself.

Initially trained in Chinese ink painting in 1983, Lee’s works have demonstrated a unique sensitive observation.  Threads of Luminosity is an exhibition of time and existence. Every second of our presence is immediately a second passed. Through these works on paper with sunlight, which the artist calls “Time Paintings”, the artist uses day light as her paint, and the shadows of everyday objects in her surroundings becomes her “brushes”.  As both an artist and a maternal figure, Lee carefully observes her two roles and how they she relates to the various life forms, along with her family exists the insects, birds and plants around her in her home transforming her physical space into a land of endless imagination.

“We are like living on a thread of time. Sometimes our threads cross, sometimes we part.  Just like different people joining and parting from your life.” Lee says, “My son is like a mirror to me.  He reminds me of my past, of my own growth, of the relationship between generations in the family.  It is like a cycle.  He is the inspiration of my works.”

In the first room of the three-part exhibition, Lee brings us to see her everyday life journey within her surroundings. Captured by light and time, it reconstructs a space that contains our existence and our sensual relation to the environment. The second exhibition space continues with a series of works on paper evolving around the theme on the solitude of parting and the longing of reunion.  Lee has been working on a documentary project since 2009 which records the period when her son is absent from her life in pursuit of his studies overseas. Lee tries to recollect the memory of his childhood days and connect the present time with the objects from the past. In the third exhibition space, Lee completes the voyage with a video work that documents two minutes in the artist’s life with light.  Through the poetic dance of the shadow and light in this un-edited and original footage, Lee shows us time as it is.

Carol Lee Mei Kuen (b. 1963, Hong Kong) curated Art Forum and “‘Kai Zha’ Studio Open Exhibition in Chai Wan Industrial City in Hong Kong in 2002, which signifies the first art movement in the East end of Hong Kong Island, Chai Wan.
