Robert FREEMAN (THE RAJ PREM COLLECTION) biography | artworks | events

I began taking photographs at the age of twelve – as a hobby of course – then became interested in the history of painting and this led to creative photography.  At University, while studying literature (French, German, and English), I was influenced by a spectrum of visual arts (film, science fiction, graphics, contemporary painting and architecture.)  This led to producing photomontages in large format.  These were exhibited at the NEW VISION GALLERY in London in 1960.

Leaving University I worked for a period at the INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS in London organizing lectures by artists and writers on THE MEDIA AND INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS in London organizing lectures by artists and writers on the MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION.  I began taking photographs – street scenes, people, urban architecture – but with a primary interest in abstract imagery.  An exhibition of this work was held at the same ARTS INSTITUTE in 1964.

Over the subsequent years I designed and photographed five of THE BEATLES album covers, John Lennon’s two books, and the title sequence of their two films – A HARD DAYS NIGHT AND HELP!  Then more filmwork – shooting the title sequence for Richard Lester’s THE KNACK (Palme d’Or, Cannes, 1965), and THE NIGHT OF THE GENERALS with Peter O’Toole.  Forming my own production company in 1966, I produced and directed an ambitious thirty minute film in techniscope GREETINGS, MARY ANN!  From 1970 to 1972 I lived in New York, with travels in America, writing a script on the life of the photographer ROBERT CAPA in the Spanish Civil War.  On my return to London I designed a book on Polanski’s filmwork in close collaboration with the director, and filmed videoclips with BOB MARLEY and LED ZEPPELIN. I moved to Hong Kong in 1977 and lived there for nine years, forming my own production company.  This change of environment and the contact with different cultures in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Philippines, renewed my interest in creative photography.

I traveled from north Sumartra to Bali on a documentary assignment over a period of eight weeks and photographed a book for the Sultan of Brunei (Borneo) – a memorable experience – by helicopter, boat and jeep, through rivers and jungle.  From 1986 I worked in England on the design and production of a photographic book – THE BEATLES -  A Private View, and a film biography of the Indian musician, RAVI SHANKAR.

In 1992 I came to live in Spain, a country I first visited in 1949.  Here my contact with the world of music and my interest in photography have consolidated.  I live in a village in the countryside near Sevilla organizing my archive with a production team towards books and exhibitions on various themes – ASIA – JAZZ – ARCHITECTURE – LANDSCAPES – PORTRAITS – MUSIC AND DANCE.  One of these books – ABSTRACT IMAGES I will dedicate to Peggy Guggenheim who at a party in London in the early Sixties impressed me with her perceptive comment on the essential difference between painting and photography.
