Paintings of architectural landscapes, which combined both real and imaginary features, were reflected some people’s dream destinations.
The Gallery of Modern Art “GOMA” and Gallery by The Harbour jointly present "Dynamic Metropolis Exhibition" from 14 – 21 June 2011. The Gallery of Modern Art has brought together 3 talented artists of varying styles to present their appreciation of the city scenes. Limited Edition artworks by Paul Kenton, Neil Dawson and Lesley Anne Derks will be featured in the exhibition. Dynamic Metropolis is an abstract and energetic cityscape exhibition which depicts the hustle and bustle of busy city scenes, whilst at the same time also reflecting the glorious magnetic glow created by city lights.
As Paul Kenton loves the sea, the ocean has many moods; the way in which water and light interacts at the end of the day fascinates him. The recurring themes of reflection and movement frequently appear in his new work. He loves capturing scenes late in the day and into the early evening due to the last drops of warning light filling every available surface.
Neil Dawson’s great deal of inspiration comes from the development and evolution of his own work. He is on a constant learning curve with his painting, even in a disastrous piece he can usually find something - whether a colour scheme, method of mark making and paint manipulation or composition - that worked well and can be taken on and developed in a new work. It is an exciting and evolving process that keeps him fresh, inspired and coming back for more.
Lesley Anne Derks’s work is based on the places she has visited over the last few years. She is fascinated by the hustle and bustle of city night streets. The sounds, the smells, the lights and in particular the reflections they create. Her aim is to produce work that evokes these feelings within the viewer, almost allowing them to step into these scenes, experiencing the lights, sounds and movement.
