Lotus Vista
by Gallery by the Harbour
Location: Gallery by the Harhour
Artist(s): LAM Tian Xing
Date: 4 Jan - 17 Jan 2011

“Gallery by the Harbor” will co-operate with State-of-the-Arts Gallery to “Lotus in Its Own Way” Chinese Ink Painting Exhibition by Lam Tian Xing in 4-17 January 2010 at Harbour City’s Gallery by the Harbour, showcasing contemporary Chinese master Lam Tian Xing’s renowned Lotus series, in which he paints lotus in various imaginative forms and expressive colors.

Lam has been enchanted by lotus since childhood, as he used to live near a hill in Fuzhou known as the Lotus Peak. Over years, not only has Lam developed a particular passion for lotus, he has also become familiar with the seasonal changes of this beautiful flower. Lotus also symbolizes the vitality of nature that Lam admires most. No matter how cold and harsh the winter weather is, lotus can survive through it and wake up in spring. To Lam, lotus is not only one of nature’s beauty, but it also reminds him of his home and Chinese culture.

Lam graduated from the Chinese Painting Department of the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1990. Since then, he has been exploring different aspects of Chinese culture and integrating them into his works. His famous series included subjects like the New Territories, Tibet and lotus. Lam breaks the convention by combining Chinese and Western painting styles as he regards traditional Chinese paintings too conservative. Using Chinese ink painting as the base of his works, Lam boldly adds on expressive brushstrokes and strong colors to achieve a rich, think and colorful composition. In this series, Lam paints his favourite lotus in all imaginable forms, showing viewers his interpretation of this elegant flower and his modern interpretation of Chinese ink paintings.
