Chinese Ink Painting Exhibition
by Gallery by the Harbour
Location: Gallery by the Harbour
Artist(s): KAN Tai Keung
Date: 18 Mar - 7 Apr 2010

Harbour City’s Gallery by the Harbour is pleased to announce its collaboration with Kan Tai-keung, and will be displaying a series of his Glyphic Ink Paintings from 18th March to 7th April 2010.

Kan Tai-keung is a recognized artist of modern ink painting as well as a renowned designer, working actively in the field of ink painting. Kan brings life to Chinese characters through creativity and design concept. His recent “glyphic ink painting” series marks a new phase in his artistic development. Kan’s modern ink paintings combine the fluidity of Chinese calligraphy with the charm of landscape painting, and also include his flexible application of elements in traditional Chinese culture and images of modern media in a refreshing way. His works have been described as “full of tension, harmony and wisdom”.

Kan has set a new phase to his Ink painting style in this exhibition by enriching the meaning of characters. The painting titles denoted by the characters express life philosophy associated with the thinking of Zen-Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. Paintings are misty landscapes resembling Chinese characters built up with perfect composition of mountain and waterfall shapes. The characters not only make explicit the central theme of the works but also the values held dear by the artist. The painting titled “Natural” demonstrates this philosophy the most as two Chinese characters display a perfect integration with interesting expression.

“Ink painting is a medium that speaks to me, other than my profession in design. For the past years, I show mainly works with a theme of natural landscapes to reveal my ideals or aspirations. This time I have chosen to express my philosophical messages, innermost sentiments, which to me invites enlightenment.” says Kan.
