As one of the pioneer artists who first used acrylic to make figurative sculptures in the 1980s, Michael Wilkinson is one of very few who has used acrylic to depict the human spirit. His background in architecture and art brings uplifting power to his sculptures that increases our appreciation of life, and the pure beauty of his art thrills us in its many forms.

About Crystal Clear Sculptor and the science in the Art of Acrylic ~
Michael Wilkinson creates sculptures that personify romance and the idealized beauty of the human spirit. They are reminiscent of age-old love tales and myths represented by such renowned sculptures as ““The Kiss” by Rodin.

With his professional knowledge and more than 25 years experience with optics and casting acrylics, Wilkinson combines a traditional study of the nude with modern design and a space-age material – acrylic - to execute unprecedented sculptures of ravishing beauty.

‘Acrylic is a remarkable material. I love it for its clarity, its ability to show infused light, and its spiritual qualities. And I can tell a story with acrylic that I can’t with any other medium. It’s what makes acrylic a truly unique material and allows me to create a very unique art form.’ –Michael Wilkinson 2010

Wilkinson’s immersion in the study of both optics (light) and architecture enables him to create an interplay between NEGATIVE and POSITIVE SPACES that allows the viewer to experience multiple dimensions of the sculptures, both internal and external. He uses optical REFLECTIONS and REFRACTIONS to tell stories. In his sculptures, the figures seem to move. This dynamic sense of movement is possible in no other sculptural medium. Acrylic, which is the clearest casting material in the world, requires the use of far more complicated techniques than those used with traditional sculpting materials because it is transparent and enhanced by the penetration of light.

In using this NEW sculpting material, Wilkinson has chosen a very difficult medium in which to present his Romantic thoughts and ideas. As a transparent material, acrylic creates the illusion that Wilkinson is sculpting with light. With the LIGHT causing unique reflections and refractions both within his sculptures and on their surfaces, Wilkinson executes sculptures that are amazingly lively. This TENSION between the Romantic figures and their enhancement by light is stunning.
