Elaine Liu was born in Hong Kong and educated in England and the USA. After gaining a Master of Fine Arts degree at Boston University, she returned to Hong Kong to pursue a career in photography and graphic design. Her experiences in Boston and elsewhere in North America were formative, and nurtured her interest and talent in a variety of creative areas including painting, photography and music.Elaine is Hong Kong’s leading jazz vocalist. She performs regularly at Hong Kong’s top jazz venues, leading concert halls and cultural centres, as well as on radio and television. Overseas she has given concerts in Macau, San Francisco, Taiwan and on tour in China.
Elaine is also an accomplished graphic artist and photographer, specializing in black and white portraits and landscapes. In 1999 she held a solo exhibition, Green in Black and White, as a featured artist of the year in the Hong Kong Arts Development Council’s Contemporary Art project. In 2000 she participated in a joint exhibition alongside Helmut Newton and 11 Asia-based photographers, including Osbert Lam and internationally recognized cinematographer Christopher Doyle. In 2002 she took part in another group show of Hong Kong’s top 10 photographers for Tony & Guy.
Currently Elaine is working on two series of black and white photographs: a series of studies of the leading lights of Hong Kong’s jazz scene entitled Slightly Out of Tune; and her Green in Black and White series exhibited here.
