Birdcalls in the Floating World
by Pao Galleries
Location: Hong Kong Arts Centre, Pao Galleries, 4-5th Floor
Artist(s): XIANG Jing, Guangci QU
Date: 21 May - 28 May 2012

In association with the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC), X+Q Sculpture Studio & X+Q present “Birdcalls in the Floating World”, a bi-solo exhibition of renowned contemporary Chinese sculptors Xiang Jing and Qu Guangci. Opening Ceremony will be held on the coming Monday 21 May 2012, 6:30pm at the 5/F Pao Galleries of the HKAC. Media members are cordially invited to attend the Opening.

“Floating World” here refers to our current living world.  Xiang Jing’s and Qu Guangci’s sculptures portray various kinds of Chinese people and depict their special psycho-condition today.  The styles of the two artists may look different; however, their works both reflect the same kind of calmness, as if the artists are outside observers of the society.

Xiang Jing’s artworks are concerned with the experience of growth, female body, and the comfort of the individual.  Through different stages of artistic creation, she gradually sums up her view and interpretation of human nature.  She brings to the exhibition her artwork series — I See Fortune, where the audience will see, together with the artist, different scenarios of “fortune”.  While in Qu Guangci’s Twittering series, a naturalness can be seen as if the artist had already escaped from the constraints of the social system during the time when he created the artworks.  Living in the floating world, the portrayed characters either with a rough heart, a cool face, or a fat body appear proudly on the leafless tree branches.

Portion of the proceeds from sales of the exhibits will be donated to the HKAC for its arts development fund.
