Through Our Eyes 2011 - Breathing Hong Kong Photo Exhibition
by Pao Galleries
Location: Pao Galleries
Date: 25 Jun - 14 Jul 2011

Through Our Eyes (TOE) photography education programme is a platform for young people to express their authentic voices and explore their connection with the outside world. In 2010, over 200 students participated in TOE workshops. A selection of their creative work will be showcased at this culminating exhibition - Breathing Hong Kong.

“They have everything but feel nothing” - that’s how today’s youths are labelled. Nonetheless, creations of the workshop participants speak for themselves; woven through all the works is the creators’ heartfelt concern for the larger society that they live in. At the exhibition, we are guided through the varied landscapes of the city; we then follow them to their homes and schools, and eventually get to know more about their internal worlds.

Hong Kong people are all so busy with the daily grind that we often lose sight of what really matters. Let’s widen our senses and listen, with out eyes, to the stories told by these young photographers. Let’s be in tune to what’s going on around us, and let’s breathe Hong Kong with our hearts.

Through Our Eyes is an arts education programme created by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation. It has drawn over 1,000 participants ever since its inception in 2005. Under the coaching of veteran teaching artists, students examine issues of identity, family, community, cultural heritage and the environment. In 2010, the programme followed a new curriculum geared towards the theme, “Self and Community”, designed by Los Angeles-based Venice Arts, a renowned orgranization that launches photography education projects worldwide. They are also the curator for the Breathing Hong Kong exhibition, which features more than 50 prominent works by students on Hong Kong landscape, street life, home life, personal stories and reflections on school life.
