Following his highly successful debut exhibition at Plum Blossoms Gallery in 2008, American photographer Peter Steinhauer will return this December for his second solo exhibition. The show, entitled “Hong Kong: Surface Unseen II”, will feature a selection of new black and white photographic works that continue to build on Steinhauer’s impressive portfolio of urban and rural landscapes of Hong Kong.

This body of new works further illustrates Steinhauer’s fascination towards forms observed in natural landscapes and man-made structures. The changing of weather patterns and the interplay between primitive and artificial creations become subjects of ethereal quality under Steinhauer’s vision. What is essentially Hong Kong to Steinhauer drastically differs from common notions, and his imageries open up a unique perspective to the viewers and offer them a tranquil space to witness a city that is in constant transformation and makeover.

Peter Steinhauer’s photographs are both works of silence and works full of life. An early interest in Vietnam led him to move to Hanoi in 1993. Since then he has been documenting portraits and landscapes around Asia. His finely crafted black and white prints portray a mesmerizing and serene nature and its surroundings.

Peter Steinhauer is a recipient of numerous international photography awards, among them are:  In 2004, he was awarded a Ford Foundation Grant for his works from Vietnam.  In 2005, the United States Embassy in Hanoi chose to exhibit Steinhauer’s photographs as part of the ten-year anniversary celebration of diplomatic relations between the United States and Vietnam, which were exhibited at both the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Fine Art Museums. Enduring Spirit of Vietnam, Steinhauer’s second publication on his Vietnam works, was awarded Best Photography Book of the Year 2007 by PDN (Photo District News) and a Silver Medal in the Independent Publishers Annual Book Awards 2007. His first publication, Vietnam Portraits and Landscapes was published by Edition Stemmle (Zurich) in 2001. His works are shown and exhibited in galleries and museums internationally and are widely collected throughout the United States, Asia and Europe.
