MADHOUSE presents with honor Yamaguchi Soichi - undoubtedly one of the brightest stars in Japanese contemporary art scene – in “The Way You Look” solo exhibition.
Discerning boundless potential in Yamaguchi Soichi, Takashi Murakami, the genius of art singled him out of hundreds of emerging artists and bestowed upon him the Gold Medal in the 9th Geisai Art Festival representing the future of Japanese art. Along with the Hiromi Yoshii Award 2006, Yamaguchi sparkles under the spotlight of art and with amazing speed, rises up as the shining cosset of art collectors & critics internationally through prominent exhibitions & art fairs like “The Armory Show” by Hiromi Yoshii in New York and “VOLTA Show 02” in the Switzerland.
Gaining early fame as a 26-year-old Japanese artist, Yamaguchi insists on adopting his serious & hardworking attitude towards art which is his ceaseless fuel of life. Graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music as an outstanding student, Yamaguchi has successfully developed his own artistic theory and symbolic technique on magnifying his realm of creation.
He conjures a brand new world without constraint of denomination & meaning out of his psychedelic color through a talismanic Rorschach-like composition. The punchy & organic blend of natural & saccharine elements on the canvas intensifies human sensuality & inspiration by trapping viewers in the synthetic jigsaw of forms & shapes that are reconcocted by the artist’s own gifted power of imagination. They are distinct but familiar; symmetrical but irregular; complementary but contradictory; emanating this visionary and hence, psychological confusion & irresistibility which make Yamaguchi’s painting an ever-changing magical puzzle to unscramble.Prosperity lusters the artist’s name, yet it can never deprive Yamaguchi of his down-to-earth personality and sincerity & consistency towards art. As a personal friend of Yamaguchi, Shin Wong, Curator of MADHOUSE, has tasted the soberness of this artist life when she found the little old car, with all the fishing and painting tools inside, that takes Yamaguchi to the countryside often feeding this soul of love & passion for the nature.
