A site-specific architectural installation by William Lim. His projects often utilize ubiquitous construction materials in large quantity such as bamboo, wood, fluorescent light and mirror, which become transmuted into a perceptual, philosophical roots in the artist's social reality.
This newly-commissioned project deals with the uncertainties and intervention of life, how the environment relates to the habitants and its psychological effect, which searches for some kind of communication with the public. Illegal Structure, a common term in Hong Kong for architectural constructions that are carried out without the government's approval. These structures are intervention and intrusion into existing environments, like an added balcony, an enclosed room on rooftops, an extra mezzanine, representing people's greed to claim more habitable spaces, and in turn faces prosecution and emotional distress.
This exhibition deals with the emotional intrusion resulting from three large installations of these "Illegal" architectural spaces, which are constructed for interaction with the viewers.
The exhibition is currently held in joint collaboration with the Hong Kong Arts Festival where, until Feb 13, an award-winning play, England by Tim Crouch, is staged. For ten days, all tickets have been sold-out. The exhibition will have its official opening on Feb 19 and goes on till Mar 14.
