Dreaming - Oil paintings by Tung Lo
by Yan Gallery
Location: Yan Gallery
Artist(s): Tung LO
Date: 9 Dec - 26 Dec 2010

We have been interested in Tung Lo, and have been collecting works from three of his series; “Face”, “Jade” and “Dreaming. Tung Lo roams endlessly around the world and we rarely meet him here in Hong Kong. Every time I try to introduce his work and to explain where he is from, I say that this man is truly international. What a “roaming artist” leaves behind on a canvas is a delicate imprint of oriental culture. Tung Lo has found his tools and techniques in western art; however, he hasn’t wanted to transfer this mature style directly onto his own canvas. In the back of his mind are always the strokes of Chinese calligraphy, the layering of ink washes and unmistakable Chinese aesthetics. He has experimented many times to make his canvases look like Chinese paper, which absorbs the ink and colour as if it were splashed on by brush. He has chosen the oriental female face to express his style and the beauty that is in his mind. In his “Jade” series Tung Lo uses a patch of green to cover part of the female face, ignoring the strict rules of light and shade that govern western oil painting. He thereby breaks from traditional western concepts and creates a new harmony to express the beauty that is inside his own heart. Furthermore in his “Dreaming” series you can sense the quality of an oil painting, but at the same time feel the fluidity of an ink painting, which come together in his art. The oil and ink from his brushes make traces onto the canvas and create an overall Chinese mood. Creating a hazy, blurred effect also highlights the dream-like quality of his work and emphasizes the beauty of his dreams. From the “Face” to “Jade” to “Dreaming” series Tung Lo’s paintings are more and more beautiful. He paints neither too realistically nor too “sweetly”. He wants to combine Chinese and western materials and techniques to create his own unique style. Having absorbed influences from all over the world Tung Lo now blazes his own trail and we look forward to seeing many more beautiful works in the future.
