Symphony of Landscapes
by Connoisseur Art Gallery
Location: Connoisseur Art Gallery
Artist(s): Yu Min SONG
Date: 8 Jul - 20 Jul 2009

Connoisseur Art Gallery is proud to present “Symphony of Landscapes”, the solo exhibition of 69-year-old master artist, SONG Yu Min. This exhibition features an exquisite selection of SONG’s brilliantly coloured landscapes, completed over a ten-year period from the mid-1990s to 2003.

SONG Yu Min was born in 1940 in Hebei Province, China and is one of the most important Chinese
artists working in the Chinese ink and colour medium. Traditionally, Chinese ink painting consisted of using only black ink used in different concentrations to depict the various forms, but SONG revolutionised this concept by combining the traditional Chinese ink painting technique with the use of colours, painted layer by layer to create depth, and stylized expressions of shade and texture. He also employed the dotting method used mainly to depict and differentiate trees and plants, with the unusual choice of colours such as blues, purples and reds.

SONG is more affectionately known as the “Poet of Colours”, and his paintings will show us why. They are melodious and possess a quality and mood suggestive of poetry. SONG traveled to many different places in China and Japan and even as far as the United States, with his brushes. He painted everywhere he went and used different colours to express the charm of these places. He used very innovative colours such as blue for bamboo leaves and orange for palm trees. By doing so SONG breathes life into his works and transforms the seemingly mundane rural villages and lifeless streams and mountains into a magnificent symphony of landscapes. His vivid brushwork captures a spirit of nature, gives his works a sense of rhythm and beauty and reveals his originality and individuality.

Hailed for his masterly skills and technique, SONG was awarded the title of “National First Class Artist” – the highest and most prestigious honour granted by the PRC government to an artist – and his large scale masterpieces grace the Great Hal of People in Beijing, where governmental meetings are held. Also highly acclaimed internationally, SONG has held numerous exhibitions in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, France, Germany, Italy and the USA. He is also the second artist who ever held a solo show at the Beijing Art Museum in China, after Chinese master artist, Wu Guangzhong.

This exhibition is a rare opportunity to view SONG’s works from the best years of his artistic journey,
before he retired in 2003 due to his deteriorating health, and offers an interesting variety of styles that SONG has employed over the years.
