YU Han Xi, born in Hunan in 1976, is a renowned figurative painter from China and is known for portraying the Tibetan people in a highly refined manner. He has an amazing ability of capturing minute details of his subjects’ facial expressions on his monumental canvases. In his new works, viewers will be drawn to the detailing of the face on the Tibetans – the strands of hair that has been ruffled by wind; the young man’s rough, wrinkled skin made older by the harsh Tibetan climate and the intense expression on his face. With Yu’s superb skills, he is able to create a photographic visual effect, with a subtle illumination outlining their figures. And through his creations, YU describes the lives of the Tibetans and highlights their strength and resilience to the harsh living conditions. In contrast, we can also find a tinge of softness in his subjects; and are drawn into the mystical world of the Tibetan highlands.
