Eiffel CHONG biography | artworks | events

Born in 1977 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Eiffel Chong graduated with a Masters in International Contemporary Art and Design Practice from the University of East London and is currently a photography and creative advertising lecturer at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Malaysia. Chong’s works have been exhibited extensively across the Asia-Pacific region, at the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur; Valentine Willie Fine Art, Southeast Asia and the Singapore International Photography Festival amongst many more.

Besides his production of artistic work, Chong is highly engaged with the Malaysian photography community and serves as a mentor for the Photography Society of Petaling Jaya, as well as the Goethe Institute Malaysia/Nikon Shooting Stars Programme. In addition, he is regularly appointed to the panel of judges for internationally recognised photography awards and competitions.

Eiffel Chong’s work considers the abstract concepts of life and death through banal details, silent landscapes and curious obsessions he observes from daily life. Carefully interweaving notions of memory, place and identity, Chong constructs scenarios that hinge on the boundary of fiction and reality to play on the psychology of life and death. Central to his practice is the idea of fragility, of human life within the rapid flux of a city, and of built structure within an increasingly unpredictable natural environment.

His works all share a sense of abandonment and isolation, creating slightly wistful and melancholic moods that both convey and document the passing of time, transition and history.
