‘Hong Kong Waters’ is a multimedia photo/video/sound exhibition of Hong Kong’s urban waterscapes by German artist Andreas Müller-Pohle.
Surrounded by the sea from all directions, Hong Kong is aptly named the Oriental Pearl. Water symbolizes luck and money in Chinese culture; therefore many do attribute the metropolitan status of Hong Kong to its favorable coastal location.
'Hong Kong Waters', the second part of Andreas Müller-Pohle's water project trilogy after ‘The Danube River Project’, offers a cross-sectional profile of this city of water. He likens the fluidity of water to the non-linear mode of the East, and develops his vision of the waterscape progressively from a line (a river) to a square (a city) and eventually to a circle (an island). Combining the expanding vertical skyline of high-rises with the shrinking horizontal coastline, the urban landscape of Hong Kong is captured through Müller-Pohle's refreshing lens, alongside the unique half-half overwater/underwater technique. ‘
Hong Kong Waters’ was first presented by Lumenvisum Gallery at Hong Kong Arts Center, and later the Jockey Club Creative Arts Center in April and June 2011 correspondingly. AO Vertical Art Space is honored to host Müller-Pohle's third solo exhibition of the 'square' city. With the beautiful soundtracks composed by Japanese sound artist Shingo Inao, the smaller prints at our ‘vertical flow’ gallery will present another facet of Müller-Pohle's multimedia innovation of photography, sound, and video.
