I am Iconic Limited Edition
by Opera Gallery
Location: Opera Gallery
Date: 11 Sep - 24 Sep 2009

Opera Gallery Hong Kong is honored to introduce two iconic collections of works by Chinese Contemporary Masters Yue Minjun and Zhang Xiaogang.

Both artists earned a notable and significant place within the international art arena ranking as the top two most valuable living Chinese artists as per Bloomberg reports.

Each of the collections include 20 original lithographs, set in a brushed aluminum case, decorated by an original mural relief, personally signed and numbered by the artists.  The works are printed on arches paper; 100% cotton fiber paper, assuring the best printing quality made in France today.  The lithographs are limited edition of 130 prints, all sized 120 x 80 cm and each is accompanied by an original poem written by the renowned Poet, Fernando Arrabal.

Arrabal, a Spanish playwright, screenwriter, film director, novelist and poet was born in 1932 in Spain and has been living in France since 1955. He has directed seven full-length feature films, published over one hundred plays, fourteen novels, seven poetry collections and his widely celebrated “Letter to General Franco” during the dictator’s lifetime. Known for his deeply political, revolutionary and bohemian work, Arrabal poems enhance the beauty and importance of both of these collections.

Ante Glibota, Art and Architectural Historian, a Titulary Member of the European Academy of Arts, Science and Humanities and the author of numerous art books and publications have written the introduction text for these exquisite sets.

The triumph of Chinese Contemporary art is a fascinating tale to be studied and fully understood only in decades to come.  The radical transformation of China in recent years and the massive economic development of the region made it’s mark on the art world as well and China has quickly became one of the world's largest art market, following the world leading art markets; United States and United Kingdom.

Yue Minjun work has been described by Herald Tribune as ‘one of the most recognizable images of Chinese contemporary art’. Known for his enigmatic self-portraits with the jaw-breaking grin, the Beijing-based artist is a phenomenal talent with international appeal .Art critics are known to relate his work to the Cynical Realism movement emerged after 1989 in China.

During 2008 the auction market raised a total of US$30 million worth of sales of Yue Minjun works. The original works ‘Take the plunge’ and ‘Big Swans’ (appearing in this collection) are among these works, fetching over US$2 million each.

Zhang Xiaogang acclaimed Bloodline Big Family series has positioned Zhang at the front line of Chinese Avant Guard art. A contemporary Chinese symbolist and surrealist painter, Zhang work constitute some of the most sought after paintings in the world capturing the family trauma during the time of the Cultural Revolution. The thin red lines running through his works represents the family ties that connect the family members and bind them together, emphasizing the importance of family in the Chinese culture. Zhang Xiaogang work is collected by prestigious Museums and important collectors world wide including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai Art Museum, China and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.
