Marlène Mocquet
by Feast Projects
Location: Feast Projects
Artist(s): Marlène MOCQUET
Date: 19 Apr - 26 May 2012

FEAST Projects is delighted to announce Marlène Mocquet's first major show in Asia. Marlène Mocquet, at 33 years old, is a rising star in the art world. The honors and kudos she has earned give her this esteemed standing. Highlights include: a 2009 one woman retrospective at the Contemporary Art Museum in Lyon, an invitation to the Shanghai Biennial (2010), a commissioned work from fashion designer Christian Lacroix; her Art Prizes and Grants include the prestigious Pierre Cardin Prize, the Hiscox Prize, and the
Alphonse Cellier Prize.

Melding surrealism with the sublime, Mocquet masterfully executes her canvases in drips and impastos of mixed media creating a personal, poetic and fantastic universe that piques our curiosity. Every disparate picture is populated with characters, animals and anthropomorphous objects composing an extremely sophisticated image. Mocquet’s work has multiple references: Bosch, Klee, Ernst, Murakami, Betty Boop, Tim Burton; yet the end product is always undeniably Mocquet. She discovered painting as a form of self-therapy, drawing on Symbolism, Surrealism, Expressionism, and Action-Painting, as well as on popular imagery from manga and cartoons.

“Her candy-jeweled palette belies her explosive paintings populated with anthropomorphic blobs, animals and monsters; And we enthusiastically follow her into a warped, ethereal and fantastic universe – one that is hers alone,” describes Philippe Koutouzis, Director of FEAST Projects. Mocquet’s unlimited imagination and singular faux-naif style are unforgettable and from the start her work has been received with great applause from the critics and the public.

This exhibition is part of Le French May 2012 program, presented by FEAST Projects, and supported by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau.
