There is a strong tradition of abstract art in China, and Zee Stone Gallery here presents recent paintings by two premier exponents in the field, Bo Yun and Liu Zhen, both well known to the HK audience, and introduces three exciting new talents, Hou Xi and Zhang Wenhua from China, and Robert Niesse, from Germany.
Hou Xi is a young artist from Chengdu, South West China. The smoothly curved lines of her paintings, inspired by Chinese ink paintings, encompass complementary fields of colour and construct a complex, dazzling composition, conveying a sense of of constant movement. Her paintings interpret of the abstract concepts of time and space, where the sense of movement created by the line reflects the passing of time and the infinity of space.
Zhang Wenhua, also known as Zipu, is a young artist from Shanghai. His paintings feature blocks of colour overlaid with contrasting areas of light and shade.
Bo Yun’s ethereal landscapes express a joyful celebration of nature and the spiritual essence of the landscape.
Liu Zhen’s lacquer paintings, inspired by the art of China’s past, infuse a traditional medium with a bright contemporary expression. His paintings feature the highly unusual technique of engraving on the lacquer surface.
Finally, by way of comparison with the European abstract tradition, we present Robert Niesse, a young German artist from Cologne. His paintings are reminiscent of the great Gerhard Richter, strong compositions of bands of colour sweeping across the canvas.
