Artist(s): Jaffa LAM
Date: 12 Oct - 5 Nov 2013

After doing a major solo exhibition at The Hong Kong Arts Centre and publishing a book entitled 'Away from the crowd' earlier this year, and fresh from representing Hong Kong in this year's Setouchi Triennale in Japan, Jaffa produces sculptures which mimic the world's famous gemstones, in terms of shapes, cuts, facets and colour. The sculptures are assembled using recycled materials i.e. crate wood and old furniture as this has always been Jaffa's signature.

Jaffa questions the definition of value above all else. Who has the authority to put a stamp on the value? How many of the things we treasure lasts? What Jaffa is trying to understand is universal to all human beings, yet the 'nothing-seem-to-last' attitude and 'unlimited desire' are particularly apparent in Hong Kong.

About the artist:

Jaffa received her BFA and MFA at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She was one of the artists selected by the HK Government's Art Promotion Office for its "Artists in Neighbourhood Scheme" in 2003, the fellow of the Desiree and Hans Michael Jebsen Fellowship of Asian Cultural Council in 2006, the invited artist of the 10th anniversary of Tree Museum in Toronto in 2007, and the New York Urban Glass visiting artist fellow in 2007-2008.
