Cai Ling
by Voxfire Gallery
Location: Voxfire Gallery
Artist(s): SAN Chiu Yan
Date: 23 Aug - 21 Sep 2013

Voxfire Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of mixed media artworks by emerging Hong Kong-based local artist San Chiu Yan. "Cai Ling", which literally means “Colorful Spirit”, series were created while San Chiu was exploring life, soul and inner value. "Cai Ling" is the inner power within all creations imagined by San Chiu. He captured the moment when the colorful souls of daily objects burst out from their physical shells. Through his surrealistic imagination and painting style, the artist attempts to present the spirit of creation in front of the audience. San Chiu brings out the beauty of life through the richness in colors; through some in-figurative flowing motion, he attempts to implicitly present the freedom that lies within these colorful souls.

The "Cai Ling" exhibition presents the three stages of thought by the artist - “Embarkment”, “Hong Kong” and “Returning”, featuring over 20 pieces of artworks which include oil paintings, acrylic paintings and color pencil drawings.

"Embarkment" series show a bunch of colorful souls bursting out from some old or obsolete vehicles. San Chiu is hoping that by sitting inside these cars, he could "start-up" those colorful souls, and therefore the colors in his life.

"Hongkong" series was inspired through the artist's observation of the daily life in Hong Kong. The choosing of different subject matters in the pieces represents the losing of childhood, relatives, habit and memories of the artist.

"Returning" series disclose the artist's pure feeling towards Cai Ling.

These three stages implicitly show the artist's curiosity, exploration and self reflection towards life.

Objects and things that were abandoned or will soon be abandoned acts as the subject matter in the "Cai Ling" series. San Chiu believes that although everything may be abandoned eventually, what are really being abandoned are only their physical shell, while their strong inner spirit would last forever.
