Maya
by Voxfire Gallery
Location: Voxfire Gallery
Artist(s): Michael LAM, SZE C.
Date: 11 Jan - 9 Feb 2013

Voxfire Gallery is pleased to present “Maya’’ the joint exhibition by two Hong Kong based artists Sze. C and Michael Lam. The tattoo artist and the body painter, whose works are defined by their static nature, challenge the idea of permanence and reality.

What we perceive as truth is often misguided by partial understanding and pragmatic beliefs, and how we gain knowledge of truth is influenced by emotions and sense perception. Essentially, our understanding of the world is based on our own projection of the world, such illusion is described by the Sanskrit word Maya.

The idea of that an ultimate truth exists is comforting, but unrealistic. The show questions the relationship between perception and reality. Sze and Michael created a collection of work that address the limitations of our perception and challenge our concept of reality.

About the Artists:

Sze. C is an experienced tattoo artist. Besides tattoo and body art, Sze. C has also created works exhibited both in Hong Kong and overseas. She is also the co-founder of BodyRock, a non-profit organization that brings audio and visual entertainment to Hong Kong, benefiting various Hong Kong based charities.

Michael Lam had taught body art in a make-up school and works in a variety of media including oil, lacquer and pencil. His painting style is abstract and surrealist. He painted Mr. Jackie Chan’s face for the charity project “Save China’s Tigers 2007” and created body painting work for “UNICEF China Children’s Week 2011”.
