Grotto Fine Art takes great pleasure in presenting the acclaimed Hong Kong photographer So Hing-keung’s one-man exhibition. One of Hong Kong’s most applauded photographers, acclaimed for his unique style and rare sensitivity, So captures the city’s unique spirituality unlike any of his contemporaries. He’s the Wong Kar-wai of photography, creating intensely allegorical work that looks beyond the obvious, capturing the pulsating, profound moments that exist in our city’s forgotten spaces. On display will be a body of work from 2009 – 2010, featuring cityscape and city scenes.
From his explorations of pre-1997 British colonial rule to the post-1997 Special Administrative Region, from his physical surroundings to his inner psyche, from colour to monochrome, So Hing-keung leads viewers on a visual and spiritual journey. His search for images is also the metaphoric search for a deeper meaning, for identity and existence, experienced by every soul
So Hing Keung obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Photographic Design from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He was awarded a photographic fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council for a research trip in the USA in 1995. He was also winner of Judges and Gold Awards in 1997 and 1999. He was granted a one-year Fellowship for Artistic Development by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 1998. He has held numerous one-person shows and group shows since the late eighties in Paris, Berlin, New York, Halifax and Hong Kong. Currently he teaches photography part time at the Department of Fine Arts, the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
