Artist Statement:
With the influences of Dada, Fluxus, Happening and other relevant art movements since the early 20th Century, the concept of artists presenting art with their bodies (not in a traditional sense of performing arts) has become common. I have been interested in such phenomenon in contemporary art and developed a series of wearable sculptures expressing my observation of the human body, my own body in particular, on how the body perceive, adapt and interact with the surroundings. My new project "The Constrained Body" goes along this line of artistic investigation intends to further explore the constraint and the possible liberation of the body in both the physical and the spiritual sense.
In this new project, the very solid and abstract materials, steel and light (and what in-between, the shadow) are being incorporated. "Aureola no.1" is a black steel headpiece topped with a large circular plate  which has hundreds of  holes drilled on it in a radiated pattern. Lights could just come out from the holes as the steel piece is placed in front of the light. It  generates a glimmering pattern which looks like a halo of the saint in classical religious paintings. By using light and steel as the metaphor of physical elements and spiritual experience, I attempt to explore the duality of the body - its constraint and its liberation.
