Scape
by Grotto Fine Art
Location: Grotto Fine Art
Artist(s): Kevin FUNG
Date: 19 Dec 2013 - 7 Jan 2014

Grotto Fine Art takes pleasure in presenting renowned Hong Kong sculptor Kevin Fung Lik-yan’s solo exhibition - SCAPE. Either in calmness or aggression, the iconic miniature figures situated in wooden mountains, streams and rock shores contemplate or take action in order to reveal their interaction with the surroundings. The pragmatic and exquisite craftsmanship of Fung captivates audiences with his profound concerns including, but not limited to, the relationship of urban citizens with the environment. On display will be a body of works in wood, bronze with ready-made objects that showcases the mindscape of the artist.

As a further chronicle developed from his last solo exhibition at Grotto in 2010, the miniature figures in Fung’s sculptures continue to narrate the tale of the local lifestyle. In lieu of being coerced to ponder on their dilemma, the pressed down heads of the generalized, pale-colored figures seem to look out for a solution. Unlike the stand-alone stern base of the last series, the sculptures in the new series establish a dialogue in a pair and display sequential events to reflect the pure and coherent thoughts of the artist. Echoing to one another, Fung’s sculptures constitute a scape that is close to all walks of life in modern Hong Kong. Despite the abundant features of landscape, Fung’s artworks not only mirror the dialogue between human and the surrealistic nature, but also the interaction of people in response to rumors and slanders. As if you can hear the murmur between the duel nameless figures, the uncanny exchange of conversation channels the sentiments of the artist to the audiences and epitomizes his unspoken wish to our city.

With the rich texture and fine craftsmanship of Fung’s carve, viewers are absorbed by this socio sonata and taken onto their own reflective journey. SCAPE, a sentimental tribute to the cultural identity of Hong Kong citizens, is ambiguous yet light-hearted.
