Grotto Fine Art presents Hong Kong artist Wai Pong-yu's solo exhibition. Meticulous and delicate, Wai's new series of biro line drawings captivates the audience with its strong representation of emotions and ultimately redefines the role of line-renderings in contemporary Chinese art. On display will be a new series of work in 2013, featuring abstract figures, landscapes and gothic compositions.
Line has played a central role in the development of Chinese painting throughout the history. From primitive usage in seal carving and calligraphy to the modern incarnations through hair and gun powder, Chinese artists are constantly in search for the nature of line and redefine lines to suit their contemporary identity. Hong Kong artist Wai Pong-yu continues to propel this genre to a rhythmic poetry in line with expressionism. His almost ritual, meticulous line drawings done by a ball pen transmits an abstract expression and power through an unspoken bizarreness. Fierce and dynamic, Wai's lines constantly grow and expand beyond the vision. They form organic plantations and streams, shades and light, and even figural depictions, then fade in quiet. Relentlessly, Wai's lines transpose through ages and contemporary boundaries.
