Artist(s): KONG Yiu Wing
Date: 18 Oct - 7 Nov 2012
Grotto Fine Art takes pleasure in presenting “Recursive Place”, the first one-man exhibition of Kong Yiu-wing’s paintings at the gallery. Kong’s painting combines traditional methods and silkscreen technology to achieve a multi-layer composition and image build-up. They capture specific scenes in multiple “shots” similar to browsing through in “Street View” at Google Map. Through his repetition of scenes, Kong’s painting challenges our perception of place, privacy and security, a common sentiment for a city dweller. Kong was born in Hong Kong in 1988. He received his BA in Fine Art at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2011 after spending a year as an exchange student at Carnegie Mellon University, USA. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Grotto Fine Art Award in 2011.
“Along with the gains of knowledge of geography by the human civilization, there is no more unknown place remains on the surface of the earth ... Our recent world is congested with various kinds of knowledge and incapable to contain room for imagination. We can foresee our future in soon, that the sum of all scientifically-drawn maps in the world will allow you to understand all possibly-known geographical features. However, the place you could never learn is the entrance of Utopia.” -Dung Kai Cheung, Di Tu Ji
