Grotto Fine Art takes great pleasure in presenting Wong Xiangyi's new exhibition P.S. at our gallery. The exhibition contains a body of work that spans 2 years and stylistically transcends Chinese ink painting tradition and Western romantic figural painting. A leading ink painter, Wong possesses unparallel skills and knowledge in both traditions. Using fine brush painting technique on silk, Wang perfectly matches the linear quality of her medium with the intimate and delicate expressions of her subject.
Wang Xiang-yi's painting challenges conventional perception of same-sex relationships. Immensely romantic and lyrical, Wang's work uses both symbolic and objective depictions to bring forth the complexity of modern day love. Using fine brush painting technique on silk, Wang perfectly matches the linear quality of her medium with the intimate and delicate expressions of her subject.
Wang's new collection features a series of apparently common scenes of a couple. Mounted without border, the transparency of the Chinese ink and diluted hues creates a dreamlike atmosphere. Focusing on interaction between two people, Wang's subjects perform simple and subtle gestures to express their unspoken dialogue. With the combination of facial expression and body language, this series captures a spirituality that defines romanticism.
Wang receives her Bachelor of Fine Art from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2010. She is the recipient of the 2010 Grotto Fine Art Award.
