Grotto Fine Art takes great pleasure in presenting a group exhibition of seven leading Hong Kong sculptors, Kacey Wong, Rosanna Li, Fiona Wong, Ho Siu-kee, Danny Lee, Kevin Fung and Kum Chi-keung. The Sculptural Dimension features the artist's interpretation of the theme “Democracy vs. Freedom” in their respective medium. This exhibition represents the second part of Grotto's tenth anniversary program.
The exhibition concept stemmed from the core value of our Hong Kong existence: a city with freedom not democracy. It was not a new situation. Ever since the colonial era, Hong Kong was given high degree of autonomy as well as civil liberty. An apolitical mentality was inserted to the general public to support the laissez-faire ideology, a fundamental way of governance that enabled dynamic economic growth without offering political rights. After 1997, the HKSAR government continued to employ such method. While it talked about universal suffrage and development of democracy, it remained hesitant about full democratic reform. The reason for this was clear: how could the political system of a city contradicts with the ruling party of its country? Is our “one country; two systems” simply an adaptation of British's laissez-faire ? Is it true that Hong Kong is better off with freedom not democracy?
Seven of Hong Kong's most established sculptors gave answers to these questions through artworks in their respective mediums. Given their different background and experiences, each provided direct response to illustrate the irony, hope and anxiety of living in Hong Kong . This collection featured striking pieces that captured our attention and challenged our understanding of desires and limitation, confinement and liberation, revolution and suppression. With the recent imprisonment of Liu Xiaobo and Ai Weiwei, it is timely that this exhibition offers a voice out for all concerning freedom and democracy.
