In Hong Kong, space is a massive commodity and it is easy to become obsessed with creating it, finding it, getting it, affording it and keeping it. In Space (Touching the Void) Chantown explores the wider implications of space – from not having enough of it, to emptiness, desolation, loss and voids – all emotions that she relates to some of her experiences of growing up as a half Chinese girl in the UK. Using the juxtaposition of void spaces with vibrant splashes of paint, sand, collage, embroidery and the use of lyrical text, Chantown creates an interesting duality in her work.
Vickie Chan AKA Chantown is a Hong Kong-based artist and musician who was born and raised in the UK. Inspired by popular culture, music and the world around her, she often cites song lyrics or record covers as she juxtaposes image and text – creating a discourse with which to engage her audience. On first glance, both image and text hold their own meanings and memories – but placed together, a dichotomy is created requiring a second look that holds the viewer at ransom.
