Som Tot Moy
by Culture Club Gallery
Location: Culture Club Gallery
Artist(s): Gary TYSON, Chris DIXON
Date: 10 Jan - 5 Feb 2011

Taken from the Cambodian language of Khmer “som tot moy’” literally translates into English as “One picture please”. This was a phrase that was frequently used to seek permission and to gain the trust of prospective subjects as two photographers sought to capture an up close and personal view of Cambodian life.

Cambodia known equally for its temples and the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge is a fast emerging yet struggling environment. Its people portray a spirit of resilience and happiness; a sense of satisfaction for what they have and how they survive that is disarming for many an ‘Established Nation’ tourist.

The pictures are taken in environments that are off the beaten tourist path and capture working life for many – whether this be at the Crab Markets and the boatyards of the South, farm workers in rice fields, children begging at temples or digging for recyclable rubbish, or selling photocopied books on the river front of Phnom Penh. It also offers a glimpse into the reverence of Buddhist Pagodas and the important role that these play in Cambodian life.

The exhibition showcases the cycle of Cambodian life from the young to the elder members of society. It portrays the self-determination of a nation made up of individuals and the happiness / contentedness in the face of daily adversity.

About the Photographers:

Gary Tyson (www.f8photography.com.hk)

Gary having had plenty of experience in the world of photojournalism has helped developed a unique style, which is conveyed in all Gary's current work.

Before arriving in Asia, Gary was a professional photographer and videographer for the British Army. His work has taken him to a variety of locations all over the globe, including war zones such as Iraq, Kosovo, Bosnia, Sierra Leone and Northern Ireland amongst many others.

He has had exclusive access to Princes William and Harry during their military training as well as numerous occasions being the official photographer for most other members of the Royal family, including the Queen.

Chris Dixon (chris.dixon@me.com)

Chris has been a keen hobbyist photographer since the age of 14, originally inspired by his Chemistry teacher’s skill in post production film development and his father’s ‘box brownie’.

Now having been in Hong Kong for 5 years he has regained his passion for photography after some years in corporate life, which competed for his time. Originally seeking out Gary to enhance his skills, Gary & Chris quickly collaborated due to the similarity of styles and their photo interests.

Chris is now balancing his work life as an independent Development Consultant and a photographer.  His view is that keen observation and the ability to reflect back ‘the moment’ is paramount to success in either field.

Putting back into Cambodia:

All sales profits from any pictures sold will be directed to the charity below:

CAMKIDS Charity (www.camkids.org)

The main purpose of this charity is to help children in Cambodia who are either poor or whose parents are not there for them: orphans, street children, children living in poor rural areas and children affected by natural disasters, such as flood or famine.

In a country where there is a high rate of child abandonment, they also support programs to help strengthen vulnerable families and keep them together.

Meet the Artist at the Opening Reception on Jan 11(Tue), 7-9pm, Everybody’s Welcome!
