In this exhibition, “Slow Roads through China”, photographer Jo James presents a selection of images and stories from Western China – from Mount Everest to the Burmese border – focusing on the region’s scenery and diverse ethnic minority cultures.
After a childhood spent dreaming of expeditions to faraway places, Jo James leapt at her first opportunity of a real- life adventure – a gap-year job in Uzbekistan. After living and working in Central Asia and with a view to exploring somewhere she knew even less about, Jo returned to her English country home to study Chinese at university.
In 2008, after years spent in London and Beijing, Jo relocated to Hong Kong where she has lived for the past four years. Of late, she has exercised her itchy feet by guiding guests on journeys through Western China – primarily Tibet, Yunnan and Sichuan – where her teenage interest in photography was rekindled.
