CAIS Gallery Hong KOng is pleased to announce the opening of Kim Hee Seok's Solo Exhibition "The Way We Should Go." The exhibition will showcase around 18 original works by the artist.
There are many pathe to take in our world. Paths we shoule take, paths to avoid, new, old, safe, dangerous, so on and so forth. The path of Western civilization has developed through philosophy, theology and science. Rational thought evolved into sciebtific theory and gave rise to the idea of human supremacy and the non-existence of god. This path has taken us to an era of global consumer capitalism, of increased materialism and dependence on technology, to a place where technology has created unease through nuclear proliferation, environmental destruction and genetic manipulation. Is this the path we shoule be on? THe pathh we should choose? Or are we misled? Is our current path based on an erroneous understanding of the metaphysical rooted in errors of ontology and intospection? The eerily mechanical faces of Hee-Seok Kim manifest this tension. Canvases filled with faces of men, half covered with the stripy sinews and fibres of man, the inner layer of skim. The other half is composed of delicated scientific tools, machine parts, lubricating oil and connection lines. A mechanical body operated automatically as stripes of living fibre are connected to lines of machine and replaced with new parts and lunrication. The piercing gazes of these men hold our gaze. Questioning. Where will your next step take this path? Is this path the was we should go?
