Passing By
by CAIS Gallery (Hong Kong)
Location: CAIS Gallery (Hong Kong)
Artist(s): Sang Won LEE, JEONG Bo Young
Date: 10 Nov - 1 Dec 2011

CAIS gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by Sang Won Lee and Bo Young Jeong. Entitled “Passing By”, the exhibition will showcase their paintings in a comparative method of expression that depicts a distinctive sensibility.

Sang-Won Lee captures and reveals the most impressive scenes in complex perspectives through observing the behaviors of people taking vacations and rest in various places such as riverside in a bright sunny day, the seashore of hot summer, and snow covered ski resort, etc. People depicted in a broad sight of view, becomes an abstract element with their facial expression hidden. The repetitive gestures of people and a throng of figures add a sense of rhythm to the view. Similar forms of people, while reflecting the working process of artist, invite viewers into an atmosphere of the past experiences through an anonymous or the ones yet to come.

The work of Bo Young Jeong, as if recorded dialogue with the space, is painted through her observation on transformative scene by time and angle. The artist’s exceptional ability for realistic depiction, discernment for analyzing and planning the space along with her profound thoughts on existence allows viewers to deeply ponder upon the meaning of space relative to surrounding objects.

The scene Bo Young Jeong creates is a personal and sensuous description that solely revives on the space and the surrounding irrespective of other people. However, there is an intention for emphasizing publicity hidden in the works of Sang Won Lee while objectively looking at a daily and personal incident and behaviors. Sang Won Lee’s particular observation can be read as an attempt of seeing more objectively, the reflection of society revealed through a daily life of its individual member that exists in its hidden side.

The scenes in “Passing By” created with different approaches in two other perspectives will surely allow viewers the opportunity to experience both the diffusion and concentration of sight breaking away from the ordinary scene of everyday life.
