10 Years Sharpen Sword - from Oil Street to Cattle Depot
by Artist Commune
Location: Artist Commune
Artist(s): Kwong Wah CHAN
Date: 24 Sep - 6 Oct 2011

Oil Street Artist Village used to be one of the most beautiful lands in development of local contemporary art.

The old Oil Street becomes a luxury site which costs billion dollars nowadays, whereas the “ex-villagers” have been migrated to Cheung Sha Wan afterward and finally settled in To Kwa Wan. They put a great effort to rehabilitate their homeland and finally the new “Cattle Depot Artist Village” was formed. Chan Kwong Wah, one of the artist heritages from the old Oil Street, has been witnessing the change of the Artist village. Long time passing, most of his Oil Street friends leaved the village and pursues their own dreams. Despite of this, they all have been growing up during these ten years.

This exhibition is composed of 2 main parts: The former part is a brief review of Chan’s journey of art in previous ten years. Some outstanding artworks would be shown, such as the “Moral Return” Series reflex the weakness of the moral values today, through various kinds of stiff mediums and techniques; The “City Illusion” would like to cram the delusive and repeated images, which are converted from the actual photo, to viewers’ mind, thus people would get lost from the world in kaleidoscope; And the “Sea Wave” represents the changing landscape through a minimal video installation. Besides, the other part of this exhibition would be showing the new painting series of Chan Kwong Wah. It represents the fascination as well as captivation from our city and the Nature, and reveal many fine and little thoughts in his life.

Guide tour, open studio and forum would also be held during the exhibition period. The forum, emceed by Lam Hiu Tung, will invite the Former Oil Street Artists, including Pauline lam, Yuen Kwok Chung, Rupert Wong, Wong Chi Fai, To Wun and Lai Tak Wai, to share experience toward their lives and make a summary for the past decade.
