Review Art of 80s’ —《New Trend 2011》Fresh Art Graduates Exhibition

“Review Art of 80s’”is the theme of “New Trend 2011”. We are going to explore the post 80s’ artists in different dimension, and related influences.

Artist Commune has been hosting the “New Trend” exhibition series since year 2005, which gathers fresh art graduates from various tertiary institutions. The series has provided a platform for young artists to exhibit their works publicly and fostered communications among different schools.

Under the government’s encouragement on local creative industry by, the number of youngster on studying art and working in art-field is increasing, and a new trend of art is also developed. Quite a lot of them are “ Post 80s’ ” art students from different art institute. Some of them concentrate on heritage conservation, while the others focus on their gallery art career.

Compare with seniors, post 80s’ artists got a different career path due to the rapid changes of society and market. This is also the reason why we have to study the art scene with post 80s’ artists. Most of the graduates were born in 1989 which is near the end of 80s’. At this hand-over moment of 80s’ and 90s’, Artist Commune specially held a seminar entitled as “Review Art of 80s’ ” for summarizes the art trend of post 80s’. It is not difficult to find out the characteristics of post 80s’ art in “New Trend 2011”. There must be a seat for the topics on society, politics, heritage and environment conservation; and self-identity is always a hot topic in this generation; but don’t forget the power of internet, post 80s’like taking the trendy online issue into their artwork as well.

“New Trend 2011”, a co-exhibition of thirty-something fresh fine arts graduates, has included the Department of Fine Arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Academy of Visual Arts from Hong Kong Baptist University and Hong Kong Art School (Degree Section). In order to promote new artists, Artist Commune has cordially invited representatives from galleries and art museums to form a board of adjudicators. They will be selecting four outstanding artists for the “Distinguished Art Prize”. Winners will be given an opportunity of holding solo exhibition so as to encourage young artists to engage in creation.
