"Without hysterical complaint, without self-examination of social problem or strong expression of emotion, Song Kexi’s works are images of innocent creatures being happily manipulated by various commercial and Communist symbols. Unlike many fellow Chinese contemporary artists, Song Kexi graduated from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), Academy of Arts. Despite the artist’s artistic and military training in the Communist army, Song’s post-PLA artwork motifs and context are detached from the soldier life.
The cabbage doll motif is in itself full of irony. One of the first Western toys manufactured in China, the doll became a worldwide phenomena. Song has posed the cabbage as the Communist propaganda dancer in his work.
In the new age of consumerism and materialism, when we freely allow the commercial icons to manipulate our way of living, Song Kexi’s works represent modern day approach to life than any artist to date. It is little wonder that Song’s paintings have achieved great success at Sotheby’s, and have been exhibited at museums and galleries in China and around the world. Moon Gallery proudly presents “The Happy Pose,” the solo exhibition of this extraordinary artist.
