This Summer, Moon Gallery features two artists from Myanmar; Khin Muang Zaw and Zaw Zaw Co showcasing their artworks in Hong Kong for the first time. Burmese art contains elements of Buddhist philosophy and Myanmar tradition, which is totally different from those of Hong Kong. This is a rare opportunity to explore the art from a country so different from us.
Both artists share their expressions of ordinary scenes in today’s Myanmar. This exhibition juxtaposes the work by 2 artists from 2 generations; each of whom presents high degree of skills and personal reflections of their own country.
Khin Muang Zaw’s (c. 1970) breathtaking watercolor on paper observes the scenes of Burmese monasteric livelihood. In this body of work, the artist pays tribute to Buddhism belief and practice, which has been an integral part of Burmese culture for generations. Khin Muang Zaw's superior skills in watercolor is apparent in his detailed pattern of intricate architecture, creases and folds of the fabric as well as the play of light and shadow.
A young contemporary artist Zaw Zaw Co (c. 1984) communicates a sense of freedom in his series "Beyond Living". The artist portrays grass roots people of his country, going forward in their humble vehicles into the backdrop the map of Myanmar. The feeling of hope and the thrive to get away to the better future is speaking loudly in his body of work.
