Located in western Hunan Province, at the point of intersection of the Yuan and Wu Rivers, Hongjiang was the business center in southwest China in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Following modernization as traditional water transportation became less important, Hongjiang lost its commercial significance and its development stopped.
