Sin Sin Fine Art is pleased to present “Sandiwara”, an exhibition by Yogyakarta based artist S. Teddy Darmawan, held from the 11th November to 5th December, 2010. This exhibition will showcase a new series of S.Teddy D.’s three dimensional paintings inspired by varies playwrights and poets. In addition, the artist would like to dedicate this exhibition to his mentor- the late Indonesian thinker and poet, W.S. Rendra.
The title of the show alludes to the Indonesian word “Sandiwara”- literally meaning stage play in English. In this exhibition, S.Teddy D. transforms blank canvases into three dimensional visual platforms as stages to his personal thoughts on social and political satire. His works are reflective, often playful, sarcastic and always with a dry sense of humour.
S.Teddy D. is an artist who ceaselessly questions about the meaning of art and what art means to him. With such stances in mind, he does not limit himself to certain techniques, media or themes. In ”Sandiwara”, S.Teddy D.’s stage shaped installations explores the idea and notion of “gambar”- a Javanese and Indonesian term which could only be broadly translated as picture in English.
“The Indonesian language doesn’t only know ‘gambar timbur’ (embossed pictures) and ‘gambar temple’ (stamped pictures) but also ‘gambar angan-angan’ (mental pictures) and ‘gambar cermin’ (mirror images).” –Sanento Yuliman
S.Teddy D. stated, “Painting is just a picture simplified of made complicated.” The artist applies this idea to this exhibition, through different media and techniques; the artist explores narrative, spatial and temporal elements within painting itself.
S. Teddy D. was born in Padang, Indonesia and currently lives and works in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He has exhibited internationally including solo exhibitions at National Museum of Singapore, Singapore (2009), CIGE Beijing, China (2008). His works are acquired by private collectors world wide.
