Late Night Contemplation
by Sin Sin Fine Art
Location: Sin Sin Fine Art
Artist(s): Fauzie AS'AD
Date: 19 Mar - 15 Apr 2010

Sin Sin Fine Art takes great pleasure in presenting “Late Night Contemplation”, a solo exhibition by Fauzie As’ad - an Indonesian artist based in Liechtenstein, from 19 March onwards.  To Fauzie, the late night moments of silence and tranquility are the best times for his artistic “contemplation”.  It is when all that has happened during the day, be it reality or imagination, comes pouring out with immense energy onto his canvas.  His canvas opens a door not only for audience to understand his dynamic inner world, but also for Fauzie himself, who depicts his own travelling experiences while he wanders in his works.  “The process is a contemplation in silence, of my subconscious feelings about the past or hopes for the future, all coming into my mind and being transferred into a painting.”  There are also symbols which he creates for himself and refers to as “signs fiction”, sometimes unreadable yet meaningful to him.

Having born in Bekasi, studied in Yogyakarta, lived and worked since 1995 in the Principality of Liechtenstein which is located between Switzerland and Austria, being a traveler seems to be Fauzie’s destiny.  With his family coming from different ethnic and religious backgrounds, Fauzie has been acquainted with questions of identity since he was a little boy.  He recognized and embraced his differences with an open loving heart, and this character is also reflected through the “Yin and Yang” quality of his works.  Being an Asian living in Europe may seem like a struggle, but Fauzie sees it in the “Yin Yang” way, how complementary opposites are interconnected within a greater whole, constantly interacting and transforming each other.  “It is how we exist and be different from each other.  You see both sides, just like Yin and Yang in my works, it is borderless and this is life itself.”

As an artist, Fauzie continues his journeys around the world while exhibiting in various countries such as Italy, France, Germany, China, Greece, Senegal and U.S.A.  His works are a redirection of his feelings and insights while he was far away from home, through his stylistic combination of form, color and space.  His paintings also portray travelling idioms like rocks, mountains, stairs, feather pens and handwritten notes, often spontaneous and with no fixed form; just as how Fauzie is open for every possibility, always ready to build a “bridge” between differences, always ready to make a friend.
