Artist(s): Okumura YUZURU
Date: 23 Feb - 9 Mar 2012

Gallery by the Harbour and Wan Fung Art Gallery are proud to present the “The Diary of Colourful Journey II” Art Exhibition by Okumura Yuzuru”. This exhibition will showcase the artworks which were painted by Okumura Yuzuru after his journey to Europe. These artworks are overwhelming and characterized with strong European features.

Okumura Yuzuru is a travelling artist who has been to more than 40 countries. Almost every year he would stay in Europe for some time, and this has started since 20 years ago when he joined a voluntary work in England. During these journeys, he would snap everything instead of doing landscape sketch at the spots because he would rather spend time enjoying the journey itself. After coming back to Japan, he would look at those photos taken in the trips; all the images would again flash through his mind. Every corner in Europe including those stylish cafes and restaurants, the ancient churches, grand hotels and historic clock towers, certainly not to forget all the local people he had come across, all serve as inspirations for his artistic creation.

In Okumura's artworks you could see his creative talents. At a brief glance, the churches, castles and cottages in his artworks are all like smiling faces, which give us so much joy and fun. To show you his humor, he always paints the sun like a fried egg in his pictures as a signature of himself. You will no doubt love his works.

About the Artist

Okumura Yuzuru was born in 1961 in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. He studied law in university and started self-taught oil painting at that time. Because of the passion in art, he became a full time painter and held his first exhibition when he was 24. At the age of 29, he stayed in England about 1 year as a volunteer for disabled people. He was attracted by the beautiful European landscape. Since then, he changed his style of painting.

In the artworks of Okumura, there are elderly people, people with wheelchair and woman pushing a baby carriage. As he is working in an organization supporting the disabled people, he would like to express the Utopia which has different kinds of people living together in peace. He always draws a fried egg-like sun in his paintings which is a symbol of his work as well as the symbol of the brightness of life.

He loves travel. He has traveled to more than 40 countries includes Asia, Europe, North and South America etc. Different cultures and different landscapes always inspire him.
