Toast Art Picasso
by K11 Art Foundation
Location: K11 Art Mall
Artist(s): Maurice BENNETT
Date: 5 Aug - 5 Sep 2010

K11 Art Mall celebrated the opening of its first “Food Art Festival – It’s Sugar Bliss!” (“FAF”). To complement FAF theme, K11 also proudly presents the marvelous works of “Toast Art Picasso” – Mr. Maurice Bennett, who is a first-timer to HK from New Zealand. Mr. Bennett used to be an owner of a local supermarket in New Zealand, which also baked its own bread. 12 years ago, after discovering that there were tons of unsold bakery products being wasted, he decided to “toast” the unsold bread into an “art form”. Inspired by Picasso’s work of Cubism, he uses musketry to toast the bread into different color shades, and put together his own mosaic portrait. Since then he has created over 1,000 pieces of Toast Art, including the portrait of ex-Mayor of Wellington, Mark Blumsky, which was made of 2,727 pieces of toasts and won him a Guinness World Record of “ The Biggest Toast Mosaic on Earth” in 2004. He also commemorated the 25th death anniversary of Elvis Presley with another toast mosaic.

The FAF opening ceremony held earlier also witnessed the setting of another new Guinness World Record Attempt. Using one of Leonardo da Vinci ‘s masterpieces --- the one and only “Mona Lisa” as the source of inspiration, Mr. Bennett employed his own creativity to tweak it into the theme of FAF. This art piece is named “Sweet Delight Mona Lisa”. Mr. Bennett collaborated with 11 talented local art students and installed the 6000th toast to a 5m X 5m mosaic art piece. K11 hopes that through this collaboration, young artists of Hong Kong are able to broaden their vision and horizon and be inspired.

Apart from this massive art piece, FAF also showcases three toast dresses and other works created by Mr. Bennett. During his stay, Mr. Bennett will also be holding a toast mosaic workshop for shoppers.
