Warriors Worry
by K11 Art Foundation
Location: K11 Art Mall
Artist(s): Jimmy LAM
Date: 29 Jun - 16 Jul 2011

K11 is pleased to present “Warriors Worry”, a solo exhibition of Jimmy Lam, a.k.a. R*ice. Instead of uproar and gunfire, Jimmy reveals the dark side of war by the silent figures of warriors, rethinking the reality of war in a sedate way.

Peace is nothing without war?

Warfare has never ceased around the world from ancient times till “civilized” today. In China, the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Period dragged on for 500 years. Emperor Qin settled the war with his extreme power and totalitarian rule, and eventually unified China. Jimmy's works in the "Warriors Worry" series symbolize the extreme power and sacrifice of human lives during war. He uses the well-known Terracotta Army as the model, transforming them into a new artwork of hundreds of black shiny figures. The black skulls represent death, as well as the relationship between peace and war.

These days, many people strike for peace and freedom in the midst of war. But what is war and what is peace? Can one exist without the other?

Jimmy is enthusiastic in multi-media art, and is keen on creation using different media and diversified elements. Last year (2010) he made a series of sculptures that express the anti-nature ecological phenomena. His environmental ideology coincides well with K11’s concept of Art · People · Nature. Since the opening in 2009, K11 has always been devoted in fostering links with the arts and the mass for young, contemporary and experimental local artists in all multi art forms. This time K11 is proud to present Jimmy Lam, for the mass to have enlightenment and deeper thoughts in the issue of war and peace.

K11 Artist Blogger –Jimmy Lam, a.k.a. R*ice

Currently living and working in Hong Kong and mainland China, Jimmy Lam's art encompasses painting, sculpture, installation, as well as street art and commercial advertisement directing.

Jimmy had his first solo exhibition "R" last year (2010) in Hong Kong. His sculptures raise awareness of the issues of animal protection. In his formative years, Jimmy fell in love with street art. This influenced his approach to sculpture. He tries to create animal sculpture fused with graffiti techniques, to produce thought-provoking pieces, engaging with ideas of environmental ideology. All of Jimmy's works critique the human world against the natural world.
